Written By Lalande at Studio L Face & Body Your wedding day is fast approaching! You’ve arranged where, when and how, but sometimes it’s the little things that are the big things, so here are a few tips that will ensure you look and feel fabulous on your special day instead of saying “if only…..”.
Choosing your makeup artist. It is not uncommon for makeup artists to be heavily booked, sometimes up to a year in advance. After considering all factors, phone to make a booking for a trial at least 6-9 months in advance to avoid disappointment. A small booking fee might also be essential to hold your wedding date. There are certain criteria to consider when selecting a makeup artist. The formal training, experience and level of professionalism usually all go hand-in-hand. Truly competent artists will use their skills to enhance natural facial features and structure. Good quality products should also be considered when choosing your makeup artist. If you choose a makeup artist who is also a beauty therapist then they will develop a personal beauty preparation and you will have the added advantage of glowing, hydrated skin on the day to compliment the makeup. Feeling at ease with your stylist is as important as the level of expertise to ensure that you relax and enjoy your special day. You will want someone with whom you feel comfortable as they set the mood for the rest of the day. Some people think that getting your makeup and hair done is an extravagant expense. This is your once in a lifetime special day! Your photographs are a lasting memory of that day and compared to the cost of disliking the way you look, the investment is minimal. For several reasons it is not advisable to do your own makeup on the day. However, if you do decide you are more comfortable doing it yourself seek some expert advice and book a private lesson with a professional makeup artist to learn some of their skills. Trial Most importantly, it is necessary to organise the trial at least 6 to 9 months in advance. Equally essential is to organise a night out after the trial to utilize the efforts of the makeup artist and hairdresser and to confirm its long lasting effects. Remember, you are the most important person on the day, but it is a good idea to have your bridesmaids with you at the trial to give advice and have some input into their requirements. Have pictures, fabric swatches of your dress and bridesmaids dresses and description of flowers, to give the makeup artist a starting point. If possible also take jewellery, tiara and veil. The makeup colours should compliment the dresses, the flowers and most importantly your skin tone. If the gown is simple or classical then your appearance should also reflect this. Put on your dress and veil to see the overall look with your makeup and hair. It is important to mention any skin allergies, skin problems or particular ways you like to wear your makeup. Skin & Nails To get that glowing fresh skin, there are a few things your need to consider. It is necessary to begin a good skin and nail care routine at least 6 months prior with cleansers and moisturizers recommended specifically for your skin type. Regular consumption of water is vital to help achieve a smooth flawless complexion. Regular facials and manicures, 4-6 weeks apart, will hydrate, plump up the skin and strengthen your nails. People with oily skin should avoid harsh skin treatments as they can actually increase the amount of oil or strip the skin leaving it red and sensitive. If you have been using a skin care routine, have a facial the week before and incorporate a brow wax and lash tint. Confident that you have been using these products for a while, then there is no chance of any reactions. Properly groomed and shaped eyebrows enhance, add expression and frame the face. Plucking and/or waxing should not be left until the morning of your big day. Avoid overexposure to the sun as sunburn, peeling and tan marks will not compliment your look on the day. If you decide to get a spray on tan, it is essential that you test it weeks before your wedding day to avoid disappointing results. Be sure to advise your makeup artist that you are having a tan done so they can still match your skin tone. Holistic Outlook Don’t forget the importance of body-mind-spirit. What goes on inside is just as important as looking fabulous. As you know your wedding preparations are stressful and if you’re not looking after yourself, eating well and getting enough sleep it will without a doubt show on your face! It may help if you and your partner have a relaxing massage the week before. Burn some essential oils around the house to create a relaxed atmosphere. Give yourself time to relax, take a long hot bath, listen to music, take a walk in the fresh air, go over your vows once more, then… early to bed for a good night's sleep.
On the Day Indulge in a substantial breakfast to ensure enough energy throughout the day. Instead of having heavy meals or no food at all, have some light snacks or platters ready to be nibbled on throughout the day. For best results do not wash your hair the morning of your wedding. But a cleansed and moisturized skin is necessary. You won’t be able to brush your teeth once the makeup artist has done your face, so be sure to do them first thing in the morning. Have breath fresheners on hand for the rest of the day. Remember also to wear a button through shirt for ease of changing so as not to disturb the work of the makeup artist and hair stylist. Ask your makeup artist to arrive as early as possible and allow plenty of time to get the job done. The last thing you want is to be rush on the day. Set aside a room with natural lighting for the makeup and hair to be carried out to obtain the best results.
Before the day becomes too hectic, spend a moment with your close family and friends and let them know how much you appreciate all they have done for you.
Touch Up Tips The makeup should be long lasting, however, people may congratulate you and leave their lipstick marks on your face. Carry a lipstick, foundation and tissues for touch-ups to maintain your appearance for the entire event, especially to look your best for the photos when cutting the cake later on. Use a handkerchief tucked in your bouquet or grooms pocket to wipe lipstick from groom’s mouth after kiss. Wedding hair Similarly it is important to have your hair in the best condition it could be. Consult a stylist 6 to 9 months prior to your wedding date to arrange a trial and discuss any cuts or colours to compliment the style you’ve chosen for the day. Avoid disappointment if you’ve decided to get your hair cut and it’s now too short for the style you had previously chosen. Your hairstyle should compliment your makeup. Whether you choose a simple or glamorous hairstyle this should be reflected in the style of makeup. If your hair is too tight, this will show on your face, especially in photos and it also may have a tendency to age you. Similarly, hair that is too loose can look messy and compete with the look of the dress and veil. In choosing a style, consider the positioning of the veil and tiara. A few crystals, tiny flowers or jewelled hairpins can help to decorate your hairstyle but be sure not to over do it. The Overall Style The total effect of your dress, hair, makeup, and jewellery will ultimately depend on your personal preferences; however there are a few things to consider. What time of day is your ceremony? If it is a day wedding then a more natural softer look might be more appropriate or if it is an evening wedding then a more dramatic but still feminine look might be more suitable. The time of year also needs consideration. In Summer/Spring brighter pastel colours are more suitable or Winter/Autumn lends itself to warmer, deeper colours. Whatever you choose, remember that your makeup needs to be a little more dramatic than your everyday makeup so as not to be too washed-out in photos. A qualified makeup artist will also be experienced at balancing all the competing concerns such as compensating for an overall white appearance or alternatively an overly colourful one. You will be the centre of attention for the duration of the day and you will want to look and feel your best.
